What is Limescale?
Ever wonder what that white layer forming at the bottom of your kettle is? That residue, also known as limescale is what’s left behind after hard water evaporates.
The minerals that cause limescale naturally occur in our drinking water. Limescale (often referred to as scale) is the hard white and chalky substance that are leftover once hard water has evaporated from the surface. Water containing higher concentrations of these minerals is known as “hard water” and it is the main factor in determining how much scale is produced.
Water hardness happens when the water comes into contact with minerals rich in calcium, magnesium, and carbonates.
Is limescale harmful to us?
Limescale is not bad for your health, as the minerals that cause limescale are naturally occurring. Limescale is also mainly made up of calcium, magnesium and carbonates, mineral elements that are already in our bodies and are not harmful to us.
Seeing limescale in your kettle is not uncommon, especially if you live in a region that has hard water.
Even though limescales are not harmful to our bodies, they can cause significant damage to your hot water appliances, such as your kettles if you do not clean them.
Limescale in your kettle can cause a number of issues:
- Energy costs rise as your kettle’s heating element becomes covered with limescale, requiring it to work harder to produce the same output.
- When your kettle has to work harder, it has a shorter lifespan and is more prone to breaking down.
